This is why I like burning man. No, it’s not because of a bunch of x-d out pill swallowing half-naked hedonists in one place. I do like them - but they could exist anywhere. But it’s things like this that cannot exist anywhere, and that wouldn’t even have a forum without an event like Burning Man.
“Each flower will have a small flame that can change its size up to 30 times per second from a candle size to about 3 feet. Flowers react to people around them with ultrasonic range finders, and “talk” to each other in a language of fire.”
“Flowers are built from clay models. We build positive and negative plastic molds. Sheets of carbon fiber are placed in the mold with epoxy resin and in a layup process, and are then vacuum bagged, cured, and assembled. A flame element is installed along with an ultrasonic range finder to complete the flower.”
This wouln’t be a lost art - it would be a not-even-ever-conceived-of-art. Without a good forum for this sort of large scale interactive art, people would not ever think of this or learn how to use some of our modern technological processes and materials for beauty and entertainment.
